Govt. PG College, Bemetara with the objective of propagating higher education in the territory, the foundation of the college was laid in July 1966 by Bemetara Shiksha Samiti in consequence of untiring effort made by Late Laxaman Prasad Ji Vaidya, freedom fighter and MLA, Janpad Sabha Bemetara and distinguished citizens.
Named After in fond memory of national leader Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru, the college started with teaching of science faculty. The art faculty was added from acadmic session of 1989.
The joint efforts of the then MLAs - including Late Dau Revendra Singh Verma (Bemetara), Late Mrs. Kumari Devi Choubey (Saja) And Shri D.P. Dhritlahre - led to acquisition of the college by M.P. government on October 19.1998. The commerse faculty was added from the academic session 1982-83. The post graduate courses offered by the college include M.Com, M.A. (Economics and Geography) and M.Sc. (Chemistry and Botany). In addition to the above, the college facilitates centers for private students in post graduation courses including Hindi literature, English literature, Sociology, Polotical science and Public administration.
